A) What sort of "holy powers" are there? Or if it is especially wide open, what CAN"T they do?
B) There are "demons" from "Hell"; does it stand to reason that there are also "angels" from "Heaven"? Has there been any success in contacting them (since I'd assume that would be one of the first things anyone would try to do)?
No attack magic. Healing doesn't work on those with pacts or demons, and healing isn't great typically. Best at purification, and barriers. If you're really quite good, probably able to discorperate/banish a demon, but it can't kill or harm.
There's been no success at contacting angels, heaven, or God. But we do have the word of Fallen that there is such a thing, and the continued effectiveness of holy barriers to show.
Are these the sorts of things that any 'man of God' should be able to do? Can it manifest or be taught to anyone? Or does it take a special quality or bloodline, training, etc? Would the Church be seeking/tracking humans with any sort of holy power?
Basically I'm kinda wondering a ballpark on "holy warrior" (ha ha) numbers, and relatedly the power of the Church (like say, of the 800k in the city, maybe 1 in 10 have some sort of weakish power? or is it more like there are only 500 guys with any power at all, etc...)
Hmm. I'd say it manifests to those specifically with very concrete beliefs-- if you don't truly have faith, it will waver or not work at all. It doesn't work if you're pacted, though the pacted can enter holy grounds while demons can't. It doesn't take training, but training can help for versatility and better applying it. The Church is actively looking for people with holy power, but a lot of time they go to the Church first.
I'mmm not sure on a numerical figure though, but those are the basic mechanics of it.
Okay. Soooo it would imply that the Church would always be looking to spread its teachings and get people to join--if you can't help without faith, means you've gotta get more people to have faith, so that the Church can grow in power...right?
Just trying to get a feel for what sorts of motivations you are working with if you choose to play a man of God... (or if you just happen to be nearby; is someone gonna try to turn you all the time)
Evangelism is, in fact, a really big thing. For exactly those reasons. But, in some other ways, the church has loosened up because they're just not going to get new believers when YEAH YOU'LL BURN IN HELL FOR ETERNITY FOR BEING GAY. Not when demons are offering power as a way to survive for the easy, low, low price of your soul and eternal servitude. They don't want to make the faith hard to get into. Lots of shit about forgiveness but very anti-demon.
Question about holy powers - would it to be possible to use barriers in an offensive way, even if they aren't meant to be offensive powers?
FOR EXAMPLE: What if someone had a demon trapped against a wall, and then created a barrier 1 inch away from the wall, effectively crushing the demon between the wall and the barrier (assuming demon could not smash through the wall). Would something like that be possible?
seems like something like that should be fine? there are few enough humans with strong enough powers to do anything significant against the demons as a whole, and I'd think any demon with significant strength wouldn't have gotten himself trapped in the first place. I don't think squishing demons on a daily basis is kosher but under rare circumstances and against weak enough demons it should be at least possible...?
Okay, awesome! I was just wondering since that would be like...an offensive use of a defensive power...so I was sorta wondering if the "no offensive holy powers" thing would extend to like, perverting a defensive power to use it in an offensive way to cause direct harm... /rambles
Definitely a situational thing, but good to have confirmed as possible regardless! /o/
