ok so I think one of my characters should probably be Worst Demon Tamaki Suoh who doesn't quite realize he's supposed to be evil and instead just hangs out being rich and marveling about how clever humans are. Also he'll make contracts with attractive teenagers with terms like "MUST PLAY HOPSCOTCH WITH ME WHENEVER I ASK"
For my human I want an OC but I can't decide between:
1. Passive-aggressive yandere witch girl who will probably end up wigging out and killing her allies tbh 2. Really lame goth kid who pretended to be a vampire until he was actually a vampire, also runs around shipping everyone he knows 3. Worst Human Cassius Cumberbatch
1) Demon OC, maybe sort of low-level, Very Loyal to her master, super invested in getting humans to make contracts. Will generally try to get contracts BUT ALSO takes care of the people who make contracts because of her. They're ~her people~ and she'll make sure they're happy. Pretty open about being sort of manipulative really. Makes a point of not lying--which is not to say that she tells the truth all the time. Personality-wise, kind of a partier, likes a good brawl. So...kind of focused on expanding her/her master's forces but at the same time happy to enjoy all the pleasures the mortal world has to offer.
But mostly her approach to life and being a demon is I'M GONNA LEAD YOU DOWN THE PATH THAT ROCKS ;D C'MON YOU DON'T NEED THAT SOUL ANYWAY ;D and a side of HUMANS ARE SO WEIRD AND WEAK, WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO STAY??? HUMAN??? SRSLY.
2) ETA based on my comment in the Demons section of the post, a second quick idea. A pacted human who was sorta tricked into making a pact by a demon who took their desire!! for justice!!!! and heroism!!!!!! by pretending to be an angel (or at least less-bad demon) and lied flat-out about the pact they offered and pretty much tricked this person into bad-decision-dinosauring into a demon pact, at which point the demon laughed in her face and she realized her idealistic impulsive attempts at heroism fucked her over but good. And now she's kinda Batman I guess? Mild-mannered human by day, self-loathing fuck-up who struggles to use her pact for good by night.
Potentially cool ready-made CR for anyone interested: the demon who tricked her inexplicably keeps poking about her life. Imagine the frenemy funtimes of poking at the precarious card house of morality that keeps this person from doing an acrobatic fucking pirouette off the handle eh eh.
Since I've never really made an OC before, I'm going to just tweak some of my original fiction concepts.
For the demon, I'm thinking a guy who used to be human but was tricked into becoming a demon as part of a "save your life and your sister's life" deal. He's pretty bitter about the whole thing and does contracts as more of a "something he's expected to do" than something he has an active interest in. He's also a former prince so he's a bit refined and has a lot of pride. His contracts are a means of his connecting with the outside world and exist purely for his entertainment, for lack of a better word. He's usually looking for desperate people (like he was) so he can show them the price of that desperation. He's more a teaching type all around. He doesn't treat his contractors cruelly but he's very detached and he very much thinks he deserves more than this. He is also very much the fallen angel type of demon in appearance: black wings, claws, horns and the like.
Human: Man, do I play humans? Um... my pacted human would probably be some danger-loving freak who contracted because hells yeah KICK ASS ABILITIES. He also had a past of being viewed as an outcast because he has naturally red eyes or some shit and has prophetic dreams. To counter his self-hating feelings, he developed an addiction to testing the limits of life. He's a very "I do what I want" type, but he's also quite social and loves being around people (as long as they don't find out about his quirks).
OKAY I'MMA PROBABLY AU THE FUCK OUT OF SCARLET BRIAR. LET'S BE REAL THE SECOND I HAVE A PB THIS IS A DONE DEAL. or maybe not straight AU but expy close enough. she will be scarlet themed.
So, being a little less ridiculous and more concrete.
Human woman works for Pandaemonium, but hates the limits on her freedom she's has placed upon her, even if she's working in one of the relatively safer areas, she does basic maintenance on the Trangressor's lab she works in but wants to be able to do things herself, have her fate be her own rather than a cog in someone else's system. Demons are free to do what they like rather than toiling away on repetitive task because they have power and literally no one can stop them. SHE'S GOING TO TAKE HER FATE INTO HER OWN HANDS!!
So of course, our lady takes a pact. it's swearing to use another's power, but if she takes down the demons, then there will be no one left in her way.
Fast forward four or five years: she has a gang in Scrag's End, more terrorist cell than anything else. They cause chaos, interrupting demonic investigations, human events, and Gehenna's business as usual. She's manic in her determination and a slave to her cause— whatever it is— if it's even her own. At this point, who knows what she's thinking. The power she's used has come with massive corruption, and what drove her then and now might not be at all the same. In her efforts to sever herself from those who are pulling the strings, she might be now the least in control she's ever been.
I'M KINDA TORN IF I WANT HER TO ALSO BE A TRANSGRESSOR that's forgotten morals and norms and has confused all people around her to be the same, the puppets and the puppeteers all on the same level, she just wants to clear the stage. OR. Have her be an Idolator that's just hella knight templar ALL THINGS FOR THE CAUSE EVEN IF THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT I CARED ABOUT AND MADE ME WANT TO DO THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!
But if anyone needs to be part of a chaotic faction, this lady here is a good person to be in league with. Conversely, if you want an enemy, someone who's wronged you in the past that you've sworn VENGEANCE on, also a good candidate.
But I might not find a PB for her and also I can have a second character, so I'm thinking about a girl that's ambiguous if she's human or demon-- her powers are that of a Liar. She maintains two different forms, each for different occasions, and it's not clear which is the real one. To anyone, or anything. She either shares a house (if someone wants to be in on her secret??) in Antenora or has a flat to herself downtown. In Silverside she takes the form of a bookish girl, commonly seen researching demons, and in other places, she takes either her demonic guise or human as the seems necessary for the situation. She's hard to trust, because no one's quite certain about her, but she seems to always have good information, if you're willing to pay up. For a liar, especially one that uses her powers as often as she does, she seems quite reliable. . . But for a demon, she really doesn't seem to hold much loyalty to them, either.
So! After changing my mind about twenty-five times, I think I've decided that one of my characters is going to be an AU version of Journey Into Mystery's kid!Loki. Backstory will be something like this, if permissible:
Once, there was a demon named Loki. He was a Liar of the very worst variety, a resentful, seething pit of jealousy and ambition. He schemed, and he manipulated, and he did terrible things to humans to pay for the assistance of his demon allies, then turned around and stabbed those allies in the back. He had something of a reputation for telling lies every time his lips moved, and another for setting into motion with small nudges unpleasantly catastrophic events.
Case in point: the scheme that goaded a powerful Devastator into nearly destroying a sizable portion of Downtown and the surrounding districts. But perhaps that had not been his intention at all, for in the midst of the chaos, Loki took on the Devastator, incidentally preventing a much greater loss of life, and died as the result.
...perhaps. For like so much else, Loki's death, too, was false.
In the place where the demon Loki had died, there awakened a boy — a human boy, for all intents and purposes, powerless, though unquestionably still Loki, for those able to sense such things. And he was a good boy (was he?), much less inclined to destructive tendencies (truly?), doing his very best to make it by on quick deals and quicker words in a world full of enemies he did not make and remembered only in snatches of dreams. (Unless that, too, was a lie.) In his own convoluted and dissembling way, he even did his best to help those that might have need of it — except, of course, when his plans went terribly long. (Although perhaps that was the plan.)
Also!
I am absolutely up for knowing anyone for any reason! THIS MEANS YOU. :)
Demons, if you want to have been stabbed in the proverbial back, Loki's your guy.
Humans, if you want kid!Loki as a gopher/sometimes-conspirator, he is currently scraping by and taking odd jobs.
Possible second character, though I'm not sure I'll play two to start, since I'm out of practice:
Sadistic Plague-Carrier demon lady with a manor in Judecca Heights. She treats the people she contracts with civilly, bribing them with luxuries humans in the poorer sections don't often see, but in return she asks them to do some awful things, no questions asked. There's a rumor that one of her contracted humans once turned on her. Only once, ever.
There's a related rumor that the screams could be heard nonstop for the next three weeks throughout most of the district.
She sometimes provides entertainment for the high-class patrons of Judecca Heights' club, and the results are rarely fun for the unhappy human participants.
It's unclear what her end goal is, or if she even has one; mostly, she enjoys toying with people to entertain herself and seems uninterested in politics insofar as she can keep doing what she's doing and living her life in her own way.
Hello! So I was thinking about playing AU Deadpool for this game, but I had some questions before putting down a solid app/description.
1) I haven't been able to figure out if he should be human or a demon. I feel like he should be human, but then his powers seem to be definitely super-human. One possible explanation for his abilities would be that maybe an alternate version of his backstory where instead of Weapon X, he gets his powers from the Church. Like they have some secret division where they try to come up with weapons to use against demons. One thought I had was they they infused him with demon blood, so now he has powers not quite on par with full-blooded demons, but certainly more power than the average human does. Also, these experiments would be what drove him insane and made him so ugly.
Your mama's ugly. And I'm not that insane, just...non-linear-minded.
Quiet you. Another thought would be that he is a demon, but for whatever reason (again, church experiment gone awry) he doesn't remember that he is a demon and thinks he is a human. That could be another way of explaining why he has his powers and looks the way he does under the mask. Either way though it definitely looks like the devastator path is ideal for him and his style.
2) I was planning to have kind of meta/4th wall breaking commentary (like in the comics). I was going to place them in yellow text, and it would be something that only Deadpool can hear. Which would mean that if anyone else is interacting with him and he is talking to the yellow text, it essentially looks like he talking to himself.
3) What kind of magical weaponry is there to fight demons? Is there any at all? I noticed you mentioned in the setting section that there are shops advertising weapons and magical devices, so is that a real thing, or just marketing? Because I kind of think that Deadpool would be fighting the demons, so he would need to have a way to hurt them. Which sounds kind of difficult unless he is a demon himself.
If I am doing anything wrong, or posted to the wrong area, let me know! I'm kind of new to all this, but super excited to be playing!
OK now that I have a human character idea, here are some questions that are popping up for me about the world:
1) What is the current year in-game? The FAQ/Play Guide page mentions that 2000 was when the demons crossed worlds but how long ago would that be for characters in the "present" when the game is starting?
2) What are transportation options like? Is there any working public transportation or is everyone left to shift for themselves? I'm having some trouble getting a sense of scale off the map on the Locations page, so I'm trying to get a feel for how far apart everything is.
(Or, here's a world-building idea, there IS public transport, but it's all now ruled by some powerful demon(s), who charge exorbitant fares, but the bus or subway or whatever is still arguably safer than trying to make your way alone, especially for the pactless...)
3) Kind of a similar question but for utilities. What are options for getting potable water? Electricity? Does it vary by area? I ask because despite its dystopianness Gehenna does seem to be an actual functioning city, at least in some respects, so it seems like there must be someone (or several someones) in charge of the infrastructure things that would allow it to continue functioning as a city.
4) Also kinda related to the map, are the dark lines meant to be roads/formal borders demarcating the districts or are they just for visual distinguishing?
5) Is there any sea trade? It sounds like no, based on the location page, but given the mentions of floating markets and magical trinkets and so on it seems like there must be some source of more esoteric items for trade/sale/crafting. Is there any smuggling by sea? Or does all smuggling take place through Fell's Limits?
6) Related to the above, how big is Fell's Limits? Could a non-demon get through Fell's Limits to the rest of the continent if they wanted to? (I'm assuming Fell's Limits is relatively safe for the average demon compared to a human, pacted or otherwise.)
Being Y2K and all, yeah this feels like it takes place in AU American Earth but just how AU is it? Is it like comic books where you can mention major cities like New York or Bombay? Can I have references to disco or boy bands or the Jackson 5? Historical events like Prohibition or the Inquisition? Broadway or Woodstock or Studio 54 or pinball machines? Just wanna know before I have my dude jamming out to Bootsy Collins if funk even existed...
If not, what sort of culture is there, historically?
Am hoping to have my Plague-Carrier run a club called Abandon in Judecca Heights.
Huge, fancy place, very luxurious. Patrons are almost exclusively demons, with some few exceptions. Humans are sometimes called in to work menial jobs, or kidnapped to provide entertainment in the form of forced battles, torture shows, and other unpleasant things.
Is this a thing that sounds in keeping with the world? :oa
Er, not sure if this is the place to make these requests, but here are two things I'd like more info on about demons:
1) Appearance! SMT demons obviously look weird but are for OCs there may be some limitations on PBs and so forth. So...are there any guidelines for what demons look like? Or is it all down to how they choose to present themselves since it seems like they kinda choose their own physical forms?
2) History! Do demons just exist in hell, are there any fallen angel-types, are there any demons who were once humans who made contracts and have clawed their way up the infernal hierarchy...? What are backstory options for demons?
3) OK less an information request and more of a suggestion: I totally think there should be an "good" faction, who ALSO want to make pacts and get souls and get the mysterious artifact, but who present themselves as being TOTALLY GOOD NO REALLY!! NOT LIKE THOSE EVIL DEMONS.
I want a faction of self-righteous hypocrites basically. Just floating out the suggestion because I'm not sure I have any ideas for an OC that's like this myself.
Okay, how much do demons of different 'classes' (I dunno what you'd call the different power sets--would it count as a 'corruption' if you're a demon? are they referred to by which circle of hell they're from?) intermingle? Is there a caste system between them--idolators are more/less (politically) powerful than tempters, etc? Or is it more like states or sports teams, people have their favorite but in most cases they coexist? Or is it more like races--usually/commonly, certain things are done only/mainly with your 'demon class' but are no restrictions to interacting with others?
It's definitely going to change the way demons and humans interact if there're shit caste demons that barely get treated any better, so...
I wanna say this is noted somewhere but just to confirm: demons are only vulnerable to 1) holy stuff (presumably created in only 1 place or by 1 person, and that's why humans just didn't holy water the hell out of them to begin with?) and 2) demonic powers. These can be either cast by people who've made contracts with demons, or other demons themselves??
So, a human doesn't necessarily have to contract with a demon if they can somehow otherwise convince them to mess up the demon they want to hurt??
Demons can (and do) fight and bicker amongst each other, using their powers?
Where do humans live? There are a couple mostly residential neighborhoods mentioned on the Setting page but those seem geared more towards demons. Do humans just squeeze themselves in wherever they find space, or are there districts where the homes of the human population is concentrated?
At a casual glance, are humans with pacts distinguishable from humans without pacts in any way?
And, kinda hand-in-hand with the above, are there any restrictions on what human characters can look like? Barring any modifications due to powers, that is.
A) What sort of "holy powers" are there? Or if it is especially wide open, what CAN"T they do?
B) There are "demons" from "Hell"; does it stand to reason that there are also "angels" from "Heaven"? Has there been any success in contacting them (since I'd assume that would be one of the first things anyone would try to do)?
What have demons done about the government? Does city/state(?)/whatever governance continue as usual (well, as 'usual' given the extent that laws can be enforced without internet/phone/other instant things, so more of a localized, frontier feel is gonna happen either way I'd imagine), just with demons taking the taxes? Have demons scuttled the congress and replaced the human governing bodies with demonic ones instead?
Where I'm getting at here is the various public services we often take for granted--schools, police, fire department, power, water/sewer/gas--do those still exist? Who runs them?
I can see demons being like 'so long as you follow us/pay us 'protection' i don't care what you do'; I can see a puppet government run by a few demon sympathizers and a few demons that serves to keep shit running smoothly for Judecca Heights and less smoothly for the human enclaves; I can see anarchy having been supplanted by the majority of people flocking to strong organizations for protection and services (the mob, the church, maybe the 'bill gates' of Gehenna) in a knight/serf sort of set-up... How is human life now that we're six years in? How do humans and demons interact on the macro level?
Since hunting and I are double-apping characters who are Amabilis Sanctum-aligned, we did a bit of world-building over chat. A lot of what we came up with was in relation to AU-ing the part of Vampire Knight cast as is relevant to our characters, but here are some of the general elements we came up with along the way that we wanted to share with everyone for review and discussion.
One thing to keep in mind is that all of this assumes the Amabilis Sanctum existed in some form pre-demon arrival but really only became prominent and assumed its current protector/leader role among humans after the demons arrived.
- The Amabilis Sanctum has a "defense force" that needs a cooler name. As with the holy powers, they are oriented more towards defense. So, things like: keeping the peace within the Sanctum, patrolling the wards to reinforce them and make sure they stay safe, dealing with any demonic incursions (because you never know when a pacted human will try to make trouble on behalf of some demon), plus some people who track political developments and the movements of demons outside of the Sanctum. They are mostly non-powered humans with lots of weapons training (and/or other specialized training) plus a handful of people with holy powers. At least one is a person who made a pact, so pacted humans among the defense force are probably not unknown but suuuuuper rare because of the Amabilis Sanctum's heavy anti-demon stance.
- There is an ongoing political struggle over whether or not the defense force ought to stay in its defensive/protective role as police-like OR move in the direction of becoming a legitimate army. The previous leaders of the defense force, AU Zero and Yuuki from Vampire Knight, the parents of our characters (and obvs. this is negotiable there can always be more co-leaders or w/e if people want to do that) were in favor of staying in the defensive/protective role and there were some political clashes with more militant members of the Amabilis leadership. However, AU Zero and Yuuki were killed and put into a coma respectively a few months pre-game start, in circumstances that appear to be a demon attack but may be more sinister. So there is currently a power vacuum and the struggle has intensified. However, for now the defense force is keepin' on in its defense-oriented role.
- There is a certain branch of the Amabilis Sanctum that was always devoted to figuring out new uses for holy powers/making holy weapons/weaponizing barriers or whatever. They are probably more powerful now and engaged in increasingly questionable experiments given the current infernal landscape.
This is for thoughts on like, AC, keeping track of corruption, anything else along those lines.
I haven't quite futzed out AC yet, and that's okay especially for Beta since we're not gonna do AC! But for keeping track of corruption, I think the easiest way to do it might be to have a post, where everyone has a header for their character, and they just comment and keep track of their power usage and corruption in there. It's an easy handy reference for everyone and makes sure that the corruption element of power-usage doesn't just get ignored.

Re: WORLD BUILDING / HISTORY
Huge, fancy place, very luxurious. Patrons are almost exclusively demons, with some few exceptions. Humans are sometimes called in to work menial jobs, or kidnapped to provide entertainment in the form of forced battles, torture shows, and other unpleasant things.
Is this a thing that sounds in keeping with the world? :oa
ABOUT DEMONS
Re: ABOUT DEMONS

It's definitely going to change the way demons and humans interact if there're shit caste demons that barely get treated any better, so...

1) holy stuff (presumably created in only 1 place or by 1 person, and that's why humans just didn't holy water the hell out of them to begin with?) and
2) demonic powers.

Re: ABOUT HUMANS

OOC MECHANICS
Re: OOC MECHANICS
I haven't quite futzed out AC yet, and that's okay especially for Beta since we're not gonna do AC! But for keeping track of corruption, I think the easiest way to do it might be to have a post, where everyone has a header for their character, and they just comment and keep track of their power usage and corruption in there. It's an easy handy reference for everyone and makes sure that the corruption element of power-usage doesn't just get ignored.
